Gender medicine – or Sex- and Gender-sensitive Medicine is a new field that acknowledges that health and disease are affected by sex and gender, and that aims to integrate the biological and sociocultural aspects into healthcare.
Our mission is to ensure that sex- and gender differences are considered in research, medical practice, and education. By understanding how factors like sex and gender influence disease symptoms, progression, and treatment efficacy, we aim to make medicine more precise, effective, and equitable for everyone.
Our work involves cutting-edge basic science to explore sex differences on the molecular level, as well as data science to investigate relevant gaps in knowledge and health care delivery on a global scale. We collaborate locally and internationally to connect databases and generate high-quality, reliable data, building a robust foundation to inform policy and research efforts that will ultimately improve patient care worldwide.
We offer specialized consultations that integrate newest gender-specific insights into cardiovascular medicine at the USZ Department of Cardiology within the USZ Heart Center. This approach ensures patients receive personalized care tailored to their unique health profiles, considering both biological and social factors.
Education is the third cornerstone of our efforts. We are dedicated to embedding gender medicine into medical curricula and beyond, ensuring future healthcare professionals are equipped to recognize and address sex- and gender-specific health needs.
