Educating healthcare professionals in Sex- and Gender-specific Medicine is vital because biological and sociocultural differences between sexes significantly influence the presentation, progression, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. These differences are often overlooked in traditional medical education, leading to gaps in care that can affect patient outcomes. By integrating sex- and gender-sensitive approaches into medical training, future healthcare professionals can better recognize and address the specific needs of diverse patient populations, ensuring more precise, equitable, and effective healthcare. This foundational knowledge equips them to challenge biases in clinical practice, contribute to evidence-based guidelines, and improve health outcomes for all.
There are various possibilities to deepen one's knowledge in sex- and gender medicine, given different backgrounds and career stages.
For Medical Students:
Formal lectures in Sex- and Gender-specific Medicine are tought throughout the UZH medical school curriculum to first introduce students to the principles of Sex- and Gender-specific Medicine, highlighting how biological, and sociocultural dimensions of sex and gender influence health.
